Monday reflections: Writer’s Block

Monday reflections: Writer’s Block

Four days into his vacation, Mark Finnegan sat in the lounge by the hotel pool, his laptop open in front of him and his notebook lying beside it.

For several minutes, he had been staring at the screen without really seeing anything.

It wasn’t that he had no ideas. Quite the opposite. There were plenty of them wandering around somewhere in his mind. He simply couldn’t find the words to turn them into something worth reading.

Mark leaned back in his chair and sighed. He picked up his drink, finished what was left of it and looked at the blinking cursor on the empty page one last time.

Enough.

He closed his laptop.

Perhaps sitting there and waiting for the words to come wasn’t going to help. Perhaps he needed to clear his mind first.

He took out his phone and opened the map. He had no particular destination in mind, so he simply looked around until a place along the coast caught his attention. It looked beautiful enough.

That would do.

Not much later, Mark found himself walking along a road high above the coastline. Below him lay one of the many beautiful bays Mallorca had to offer, surrounded by rocky cliffs and the deep blue of the Mediterranean Sea.

For the first time that day, he wasn’t thinking about what to write.

He simply walked.

When he finally reached the place he had marked on the map, he found a bench overlooking the sea and sat down.

There was nothing particularly remarkable about the moment. No revelation. No sudden brilliant idea.

Just the sound of the waves somewhere below him and a soft Mediterranean breeze passing over the cliffs.

But perhaps that was exactly what he needed.

Almost an hour later, Mark got up and began making his way back toward the hotel.

That was when he saw it.

A house along the road immediately caught his attention. At first, it was simply the sight of the building itself. Beautiful and impressive, it looked almost as though it had been taken straight from the pages of a magazine about Mediterranean mansions.

Mark slowed down as he passed it.

Then something else caught his eye.

The house had a name.

The Writer’s Retreat.

Mark stopped.

He looked at the words for a few seconds and couldn’t help but smile.

I’m a writer…

His eyes wandered back toward the house.

Does that mean a writer lives here? In this mansion?

Almost immediately, his imagination began doing what it had refused to do all morning.

Who lived behind those walls? Was there really another writer sitting somewhere inside? Perhaps there was a study overlooking the Mediterranean, filled with books and unfinished manuscripts. Perhaps someone had written entire novels there.

Or perhaps the name meant something completely different.

Mark didn’t know.

And strangely enough, he didn’t need to.

Later that afternoon, he returned to the hotel and sat down in front of his laptop again.

The same document was still open.

The same cursor was still blinking on the same empty page.

But something had changed.

Mark placed his fingers on the keyboard.

This time, the words came naturally.

Perhaps he had been trying too hard to find inspiration that morning. Perhaps inspiration wasn’t something that could always be forced.

Sometimes, you simply had to close the laptop, leave the empty page behind and go for a walk.

And sometimes, somewhere along the way, a story would be waiting for you.
